Learning calligraphy can be easy to start - but hard to keep up alone.
Many people start calligraphy with excitement, but life gets busy, and practice gets inconsistent. Confidence tends to dip when you're on your own, and it can be hard to know how to do it right.
This isn't a lack of talent. It's a lack of support and structure.
Say hello to the
An ongoing calligraphy practice membership with live sessions, worksheets, homework feedback, weekly challenges, and community support. Open to all levels.
What the Write Slowly Collective is
The Write Slowly Collective is a monthly membership focused on ongoing practice and growth as a calligrapher.
It’s designed to support you after you’ve started or while you’re finding your rhythm — through structure, feedback, and community.
Inside the Collective, you’ll find:
-
Regular practice support through monthly worksheets and weekly challenges
-
Personalized feedback when you’re unsure, whether it’s refining a letterform or smoothing out connections
-
A supportive community of learners at different stages
-
Monthly online meetups where we practice together and ask questions in real time
This space was originally created as a companion to the Creative Calligraphy Course, but it’s now open to anyone who wants to practice calligraphy with accountability and support, no course enrollment required.
What This Is Not
-
A step-by-step beginner course
(That’s what the Creative Calligraphy Course is for.) -
A competitive or comparison-driven space
What You'll Actually Do Each Month
Each month inside the Write Slowly Collective, you'll actively practice, receive feedback, and stay connected - all in a way that's designed to be realistic, sustainable and of course, enjoyable. We're here to help you enjoy your calligraphy journey!
✍️ Practice with structure
You'll receive complimentary monthly worksheets and weekly challenges that give your practice direction... so you're never staring at a blank page wondering what to work on. You can participate as much or as little as you like.Â
đź’¬ Get personalized homework feedback
When you submit your work, you're not just getting automated responses. We print your homework, annotate it, and give you specific, actionable feedback, so that it mimics an in-person experience as much as possible.Â
đź“… Join a live practice session
Once a month, we meet live to practice together, so we can troubleshoot common issues, and answer questions in real time. These sessions are low pressure, open to all skill levels, focused on writing - not performing. You can attend live or catch the replay.Â
Learn Alongside a Community (Without the Noise)
Inside the Write Slowly Collective, you’ll be part of a private community of calligraphers at different stages - beginners, returners, and long-time writers, all practicing together.
This is a space to ask questions as they come up, share your progress (or simply observe quietly), join weekly challenges and discussions, and stay connected without pressure to “keep up”.Â
Participation looks different for everyone and that’s not just okay, it’s expected.
We’ve intentionally kept this community off social media platforms like Facebook or Patreon. There are no ads, no algorithms, and no extra accounts to manage — just a focused space designed specifically for learning and practicing calligraphy.
Everything lives in one place, alongside your practice and resources.
Why this feels different
Most online programs are one-way:
you watch the lessons, practice on your own, and hope you’re doing it right.
The Write Slowly Collective is built to feel closer to an in-person experience - like a run club actually meets up to run together, right?
Through real homework feedback, live practice sessions, and ongoing community interaction, you’re not practicing in isolation. You’re supported, guided, and encouraged as you go, with actual input from a real instructor.
This two-way approach is what helps learning calligraphy feel lighter, more motivating, and more enjoyable over time.Â

Meet your Instructor - Hi, I'm Karla!
I’m a modern calligrapher and educator with over 14 years of experience, and I’ve had the joy of teaching thousands of students both in person and online.
But more importantly, I know what it feels like to love a creative practice - and struggle to make time for it.
I’m a wife and a mom of two young kids, and like many of you, my days are full. Calligraphy became the way I slowed down, focused my mind, and did something creative with my hands after everything else was taken care of.
That’s why I created the Write Slowly Collective.
I’ve taught workshops, built courses, and watched students start strong... only to drift away without support. What makes the biggest difference isn’t talent or speed. It’s having a place to return to, with guidance and encouragement along the way.
This space is my way of offering that.
Many people say "calligraphy is a dying art"
I really don't believe so. In this day and age, our mind and bodies crave to create something with our own two hands, and to slow down in the chaos. Modern calligraphy invites you to slow down - literally, being 10-20 times slower, dipping pen into ink, forming letters intentionally, one stroke at a time. It's meditative, thoughtful, and creative - from personalizing gift tags to creating details for events, or even personal journaling and reflection.Â
For me, calligraphy has always been a way to de-stress, reset, and reconnect after a busy day. Write Slowly Collective is built around that same idea - practice makes progress, not pressure!Â

At Written Word we believe that practice makes progress, because learning calligraphy is a journey. With time and intentional practice, your work will grow and improve.
